Here’s everything you need to know about what happened in Survivor: Philippines Episode 14 — “Million Dollar Question” – who won the challenges, who was voted of, who played well, and who is on the outs. Feel free to add your notes, thoughts, and questions.
Aired December 16, 2012, covering night 36 through night 39
Reward Challenge winner: Malcolm — “advantage” in the final Immunity Challenge
Immunity Challenge winner: Mike
Denise – What didn’t Denise do right in this game? She was a perpetual underdog, she was likable, she performed fantastically in challenges, she was an asset at camp…and she was real. Her biggest asset in this game was that there was no-BS; she told it like it was without being phony or abrasive. No doubt her therapist background helped in that; no one in this game has ever been that effective and talking like an honest, real person than Denise. That meant that you really felt like when you talked to Denise or heard her talk, you got what you saw and there was never any mystery about her that you had to work through to figure out where you stood with her or if you should vote to give her a million dollars.
Mike – Mike’s alliance with Malcolm was a surprise, and his constant assertions that he could beat him in a challenge weren’t expected. But of course that meant it was going to happen and it did. We’re a little surprised that he didn’t get more votes at the final Tribal Council, but maybe that’s more of a testament to Denise’s game than his.
Lisa – Lisa’s growth as a player is more apparent than maybe any other person who has played this game. It never really translated to “likable” (at least as far as the players were concerned – obviously since she won the $100,000 “favorite player” award the viewers loved her); Jeff was right that she never really had a take charge moment even though her hand was in some of the bigger moves and events of the game.
Malcolm - Malcolm made the same mistake with Denise that Penner made with Lisa – he couldn’t commit and just wasn’t tight enough with her. Maybe he underestimated Mike’s game and misfigured his chances against Denise, but the moment he cut her loose and decided to go with Mike and Lisa he lost his rock in this game and probably lost some votes to perceived disloyalty.
